The star attraction for vast majority of tourists to the Bernese Oberland is getting to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. At least, that is how it has been successfully marketed.

Without denying the beauty of the place it comes within our moral responsibility to our readers to disclose the fact that it is a misnomer. Jungfraujoch is neither the highest point in Europe, nor even Switzerland.

What is it then? It is the highest train station (and post office) in Europe at 3,454m above sea level. Thus Jungfraujoch is a point from where you can watch the Jungfrau mountain peak.

Literally, Jungfraujoch means a saddle (pass between mountains) to the Jungfrau (maiden/virgin) mountain.

It is important that you know this before your visit, for it won’t be cheap!
