You can reach this iconic Basilica from Anvers, Abbesses or Pigalle Metro stations but it is a steep climb and often the route is crowded with tourists and scamsters.
We chose a different entry point, we reached the basilica from Lamarck – Caulaincourt bus stop from behind the basilica. There were no crowds or scamsters, we got excellent views of the sun setting on the steep stairways and a different view of the basilica (other side).
We highly recommend to take this route.
The basilica is iconic to the area but is not considered at par to other places of worship in the city by the Parisians. We think it was different and beautiful in its own way, and there is also a viewing deck at the bottom which offers a beautiful panorama of Paris that is unmatched.
Right next to the viewing deck is the Montmartrobus stop as well as the Funicular stop if you wish to bypass the stairs. The funicular takes you to the bottom of the main hill from where you can get to the Anvers metro station.
The Navigo Decouverte card that we had mentioned in our earlier posts works with both the Montmatrobus as well as the Funicular. What a deal that is!
